More than 500 beach-goers take advantage of free service

6 January 2025

Maureen Kruss has been catching the Wollondilly Beach bus for 12 years now and couldn’t be happier with the free service sponsored by Tahmoor Coking Coal.

The popular bus service continued in 2025, running every Tuesday between January 7 and 28, with brand new signage to brighten the trip even further. Maureen was one of 515 passengers on the buses this year which required a third bus on the two routes due to popular demand.

Maureen, who is a long-time community worker at the Thirlmere Public School, said the bus was the best way for her to get out and about during summer and is a fantastic asset for the community. Tahmoor Coking Coal has been sponsoring the bus for twelve years to help locals escape the Wollondilly summer heat.

“The Beach Bus is my four days out for the month, and I’ve been on every bus since it started,” Maureen said

“I love the Beach Bus, I hope Tahmoor Coal sponsors it for many years to come.”

Tahmoor Coking Coal’s community liaison, Amanda Bateman said it was pleasing to see the free service provided was helping even more teens, families, and elderly down to the beach each summer.

“The Beach Bus is a great summer initiative to be a part of, and we are proud of our 12-year partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council and Picton Buslines,” Amanda said.

“Each year it goes from strength to strength with more and more Wollondilly locals enjoying the free return trip to the beach.”

The Wollondilly Beach Bus is a long-term partnership between Tahmoor Coking Coal, Wollondilly Shire Council, and Picton Buslines with two routes through the shire and sixteen stops stretching from Bargo to Warragamba.

Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould emphasised the importance of the free service to the Wollondilly community over the holiday period.

“Tahmoor Coking Coal has helped keep the Beach Bus going for a decade through its generous sponsorship, providing our Wollondilly residents with access to North Wollongong Beach during the summer holiday period,” Mayor Gould said.

“The service is extremely popular with locals of all ages, providing those who may not otherwise have access to the beach an opportunity to have a great day out and cool off for free.

“We hope we can continue this service for many more years.”
