Eight local organisations to benefit from mine crew assistance

9 February 2024

Tahmoor Coking Coal is gearing up for another round of Mine Maintenance Shutdown Community Projects to coincide with a regular scheduled shutdown of its operation for maintenance.

The necessary shutdowns at the colliery enable the SIMEC mining operation to release employees into the community to assist with much-needed projects. Last year the shutdown saw three community projects completed by the Tahmoor Coking Coal underground workforce along with several projects on the mine site.

Last year’s successful community works saw a large amount of positive feedback from both the Tahmoor Coking Coal workforce members and recipients of the community projects.

Graduate Mining Engineer, Abood Alshafee, who contributed at the Dingo Sanctuary landscaping and repairing enclosures at Bargo, says he appreciated the opportunity to give back to the community he works in.

“We loved helping at the Dingo Sanctuary. It was a great time making a difference in our community, especially with the dingos around. It made the whole experience even more special and enjoyable for everyone,” Abood said.

Manager of the not-for-profit Dingo Sanctuary, Lucille Ellem said she was blown away with the work done and all ten Tahmoor Coking Coal workers who lent a helping hand with great professionalism and a fantastic attitude. Lucille looks forward to their return this year.

“The Dingo Sanctuary is honoured to have hard working miners that give their time to our dingoes, updating the Sanctuary,” Lucille said.

Tahmoor Coking Coal’s next maintenance shutdown community projects will be held this year on February 13-14. Abood said that he and other members of the team who helped repair the Dingo Sanctuary, were looking forward to the opportunity to do more community work this year.

“Working at the dingo sanctuary was a change of pace and a special opportunity to give back to our community,” Abood said.

“Volunteering let us connect more with each other beyond our regular jobs and I’m looking forward to experiencing that again.”

There are another eight community projects scheduled for the mine maintenance shutdown this year. Some of the work will be undertaken will include the Tahmoor Community Uniting Garden, The Oaks Historical Society, Wollondilly Pony Club, Riding for the Disabled Association.
